Myofascial Release Therapy:
Myofascial Release Therapy (also known as Myofascial Therapy or myofascial trigger point therapy) is a type of safe, low load stretch that releases tightness and pain throughout the body caused by myofascial pain syndrome. Which describes chronic muscle pain that is worse in certain areas known as trigger points. Myofascial Release Therapy is an alternative medicine therapy that claims to treat skeletal muscle immobility and pain by relaxing contracted muscles. Also improving blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulating the stretch reflex in muscles.
Fascia:
Fascia is a thin, tough, elastic type of connective tissue that wraps most structures within the human body, including muscle. It supports and protects these structures. Osteopathic theory proposes that this soft tissue can become restricted due to psychogenic disease, overuse, trauma, infectious agents, or inactivity. Often resulting in pain, muscle tension, and corresponding diminished blood flow. Fascia is a very strong, very connected spider web, when one spot on it gets tugged or pulled or injured, the effects ripple throughout the body. With fascia surrounding our muscles, organs, nerves, bones, blood vessels and even our cells. Everything is held together and in place. It is impressively flexible and infinitely adaptable.
When we experience a slight amount of tissue damage—pain signals are sent to the spinal cord which then triggers the muscles around the injury to contract in order to provide support and protection for the surrounding tissues. Over time this creates a vicious cycle of pain as more blood flow is restricted to the contracted area. More signals are sent, and more muscles tighten to protect the growing epicenter of pain.
Myofascial release techniques are designed to go in returning the fascia to its normal fluid and adaptable self. Myofascial release is often used over a broad area of muscle and tissue rather than at single points.
